Welcome!

We are a small family owned company, based in Cleveland, OH.

Care for your jar

When you buy a jar of Wake Robin pickled veggies, keep it in the refrigerator. Since our products are not pasteurized, they continue to ferment in the jars. Keeping your pickles in the refrigerator slows down the ongoing fermentation. Still, you may notice the lid bulging or the vegetables fizzing when you open them; this is completely normal and expected. To keep them freshest longest, make sure that the vegetables are submerged in the brine as much as possible when you put them back in the fridge.

When your jar is empty, you can leave the label on and return the jar to us for a 25¢ refund. The easiest way to get your jars to us it to take them to Anne Marie's Dairy at the West Side Market H-4, H-5 or at The Grocery OHC at 2815 Lorain Ave. Otherwise bring it to our shop, but please contact us first to make sure that we will be there to help you.

Sourcing Vegetables

Picture
We have been very excited to incorporate lots of local, organic vegetables into our products the growing season. By the end of the fall, we have thousands of pounds of local vegetables preserved for distribution through the winter and into the spring. This way, our fermented food fans will be eating high-quality local vegetables long into the cold months. We use organic cabbage, carrots, turnips,  daikon and beets from Northeast Ohio farms. Non-organic local farms have provided us with apples and cucumbers.

Teaming up with local purveyors and organic farmers means more investment and in earth-friendly farming methods and less investment in long-distance transportation costs. The result is a more positive social, environmental, and economic affect on our community.

We are glad to be part of a community that is conscious of the importance of supporting local farmers and strengthening our region’s food security.

Northeast Ohio is a beautiful place, and we aim to help keep it that way.

Our Business Philosophy

Picture
Wake Robin Fermented Foods, LLC is family owned business in Cleveland, Ohio.  We make food products in small batches using traditional preservation methods.  Our company is committed to a “triple bottom line”.  This means we employ business practices that balance social, environmental, and economic goals in our production processes.

Our commitment to social goals means that we pay our employees a living wage and when they are full-time, we provide health insurance, and  sick and vacation benefits.  Ultimately we would like to become an employee owned business. We seek to be actively involved in our community and are committed to purchasing  raw materials and service inputs locally as much as possible.

With regards the environment we are striving to be a zero waste company by using composting and recycling of our   produce waste and packaging materials.  In setting up our production facility we have primarily purchased used equipment.  In terms of packaging we use glass jars and we will be happy to reuse jars if consumers return them to us. (We offer a 25 cent rebate for returned jars to encourage this.)

We seek to be a company that is profitable and provides to the consumer a high quality and affordable product.  We strive for efficient manufacturing techniques to hold costs down.  When choosing produce inputs we purchase local and organic produce when available and costs are not more than twice the non-local and non-organic.

Please contact us with your thoughts about our company and products.

Our Home: Cleveland's Hildebrandt Provisions Co.

Picture
Wake Robin is happy to be a tenant at the Hildebrandt Co. building, located in the historic Clark-Fulton neighborhood.

A former meat processing plant, the building is still owned and maintained by the original Hildebrandt family. It was in operation from the late 1800’s through the 1970’s, and is now finding a new identity as a hub for local artists, crafts people and food entrepreneurs.

Our Commitment to Quality

Wake Robin is committed to producing high quality products, with a focus on locally- and regionally- sourced ingredients. We use organic produce as it is available, depending on price and condition. We are working to support our region’s vegetable farms, striving to connect through local markets and direct sourcing. Additionally, we are developing a year-round plan that focuses production during the local harvest season.

We are glad to be part of a community that is conscious of the importance of supporting local farmers and strengthening our region’s food security.

What’s in the name?

Picture

Wake-robin is another name for the trillium, Ohio’s wild flower, which is pictured on our labels. It is a tide of spring, a sign that the earth is warming, that the long winter is coming to a close and that a new season of growing has arrived.

We love the flower, the metaphor and the name!
